Lachung "most picturesque village of Sikkim"


Lachung (Hindiलाचुंग) is a town in northeast Sikkim, India.It is located in the North Sikkim district and is near the border with China.Lachung is at an elevation of about 9,600 ft or 3,000 m and at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung River, tributaries of the River Teesta. The word Lachung means "small mountain". The town is approximately 125 km from the capital Gangtok.
The Indian Army has a forward base in the town. Before the annexation of Tibet in 1950, Lachung was a trading post between Sikkim and Tibet, after which it was closed down. The town's economy has been boosted by tourism in recent years as the region has been opened up by the Indian Government. Tourist come from all over the world to visit the town between October and May, mostly on their way to the Yumthang Valley and the Lachung Monastry.Most of Lachung's inhabitants are of Lepcha and Tibetan descent. Languages spoken here are Nepali,Lepcha and Bhutia. During winter the town is usually covered in snow.
Lachung has been described as the "most picturesque village of Sikkim" by British explorer Joseph Dalton Hooker in his definitive, The Himalayan Journal (1855).

Lachung By Bus:
Lachung (small pass) Distance - 116 km ( from Gangtok ) Lachung is a very small town with scattered settlements, dominated mostly by Bhutias. There is also an army cantonment for the border protection. You can visit monastery, handicraft centre, go around for village. If you are interested then you can do trout fishing. A Bhutia village has a unique local self-governing body called the Zumsa which substitutes the Panchayat. It is located about 25 kms from Yumthang Valley. To get a glimpse of Lachung Monastery you have to come to the opposite slope of the highway.


Yumthang Valley Distance -  145 km ( from Gangtok ) At 24 kms from Lachung lies Yumthang, the rightfully called the Valley of Flowers as in Flowering season there blossoms vivid colours of variety of Rhododendrons, chimals and blue poppies. Yumthang is located on a flat valley and is near the tree line, the surrounding mountains seems to kiss the heavens. The journey from Lachung to Yumthang has a very picturesque landscape and is lined with Rhododendrons & 108 other types of Orchids which bloom in different colours from April to May. "Come as a visitor for a life-time experience." April and May promises colourful flowers, where as November end to March usually sees snows. Simple village folks spread scarcely admit the virgin landscapes is a food forever. Another peculiar feature of the valley is that, the valley totally covered with snow during the winter. Hence, while you see the flower bed in summer, you see snow bed in the winter. A natural hotspring is another attraction of the tourist who are said to have had relief of their skin ailment after having bath there. The visit is on the passing of Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. Yumthang valley is a mesmerizing scene with yaks grazing on flower - carpeted meadows against a backdrop of towering peaks.  It has breathtaking views where one can become a part of a timeless scene without any kind of intrusion. Hot springs, crystal clear streams, water falls, soaring mountains and natures bounty, you name it, you will find it here.




Lachung By Train


Trains can be taken directly to the railway station in New Jalpaiguri, which is located near Siliguri. This is a major railway station that is located at a distance of around 139 kilometers from Lachung. There are three railway stations in Lachung, and trains from all major Indian destinations will be available to this railway station. Train fares will be cheaper than bus fares, but tickets need to be booked at least two months in advance. Regular trains will be available from Jhajha, Alipur Duar, Howrah, Chennai and New Delhi. 


Train fares from Jhajha to Lachung will range around Rs 264 for the basic class of travel (Sleeper). Air conditioned coaches will charge fares of around Rs 979 per trip (for AC Tier Two) and Rs 714 (for AC Tier Three). Train fares from Howrah to Jalpaiguri will range around Rs 239 for the basic class of travel.
